Coastal Clean Up Day 2010
Redondo Breakwall. Redondo Beach, California. September 25,2010.
I try to make every visit to the shore a “Clean Up” day. There seems to be an endless supply of Marine Debris in Los Angeles county. Sometimes abundant, sometimes sparse but always present. I started my morning off with a run on the Manhattan Beach strand. There were already hundreds of people out picking up trash . “Thank you” Heal the Bay for running a great event. The Beach Cities of Hermosa and Manhattan are generally spotless. Very little debris.
I headed to a spot I knew was sorely neglected. The Redondo Beach Breakwall. A ¾ mile long stone wall built to protect the Redondo Harbor. I was fully prepared to walk the entire length. I had a gallon of water, gloves and trash bags. Much to my disappointment I had underestimated the amount of trash bags needed. The scope of this project was clearly to big for one guy with seven trash bags. I probably made it no more then 200ft before filling up the bags. As a lifelong, consumptive, fisherman it is always sad to see that the bulk of the debris was left by my fellow fisherman. Literally thousands of feet of fishing line entangled throughout the boulders. Bait containers, abandoned Styrofoam coolers, beer bottles and packaging, and other human generated garbage.
