As a stand alone sport or to hone consumptive diving skills, underwater target shooting is an essential part of the responsible spearfishermans best practices. It is important that the speargun is properly tuned and accurate before pursuing game fish. We, as consumptive divers, strive to land 100% of the fish we pull the trigger on. Spending time in the water with a target will ensure that the diver understands the limitations of his or her speargun. Below is just one example of how to make a target.
How to set up a target:
Purchase (1) 3/4" x 10ft. PVC pipe,(4) 90degree elbows, PVC cement, mesh or burlap fabric and string or zip ties.
Cut two 24" sections and two 36" sections of PVC
Lay on a flat surface and assemble pieces of PVC. Cement together and allow a few minutes to cure.
Cut a piece of nylon mesh or burlap allowing 3" over hang on all sides.
Fasten mesh to PVC frame with string or zip ties. Paint a target in the center or maybe draw in a fish outline.
Finally, attach weights to the bottom and a line at the top for a float.
